Selecting Your Vessel & Itinerary

Our fleet consists of custom-built speedboats for efficient day trips and traditional Phinisi schooners for multi-day liveaboard experiences. The primary difference lies in the depth and breadth of exploration. A day tour provides a concentrated look at the park’s most famous sites, while our 2-day and 3-day charters allow for access to more remote locations, snorkeling at sunrise, and experiencing the profound quiet of the islands after dark. Our 14-meter fiberglass speedboat is powered by twin 250hp Suzuki engines, ensuring a swift transfer from the Labuan Bajo snorkeling hub to the park’s core, often in under 90 minutes. Our Phinisi vessels range from 25 to 35 meters and feature private air-conditioned cabins.

The Marine Topography of Komodo National Park

The snorkeling experience in Komodo is defined by its dynamic underwater landscapes, shaped by the powerful currents of the Savu and Flores Seas. These currents, a result of the Indonesian Throughflow, transport nutrient-rich waters that sustain one of the planet’s most concentrated marine ecosystems. Water temperatures typically range from 26°C to 29°C (79-84°F), with visibility often exceeding 25 meters, particularly between June and September.

  • Pink Beach (Pantai Merah): The distinct coloration of this beach comes from crushed red organ pipe coral (Tubipora musica) mixed with white sand. The fringing reef begins just meters from the shore, descending to a gentle slope at 5-10 meters. This is a prime location for observing schools of fusiliers, several species of anemonefish, and occasionally a blacktip reef shark patrolling the edge. A Pink Beach snorkel offers a classic, vibrant reef experience.
  • Manta Point (Karang Makassar): This is not a traditional reef but a vast, shallow channel of rubble and sand at a depth of 3-15 meters. The moderate to strong currents attract oceanic manta rays (Manta birostris) and reef mantas (Manta alfredi) to feed on plankton and use the scattered coral bommies as cleaning stations. On a productive day, it is possible to witness more than a dozen of these animals, with wingspans reaching up to 5 meters.
  • Manjarite Island: In contrast to the high-energy Manta Point, Manjarite offers a placid, protected environment. A long wooden jetty extends over a shallow reef flat, making for an easy entry point. The seabed is a mix of sand and seagrass, ideal for spotting cryptic creatures like the blue-spotted stingray and various juvenile fish species. It is a superb location for a relaxed, late-afternoon snorkel.

What to Expect: A Day with Komodo Island Snorkeling

Our Signature Day Snorkel charter is meticulously structured to maximize your time at premier sites while ensuring comfort and safety. The day begins and ends in Labuan Bajo, the port town that serves as the gateway to the Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1991. The following itinerary is a representative sample; your private charter allows for adjustments based on your preferences and prevailing sea conditions.

A Typical Day Charter Itinerary:

  • 07:30: A private, air-conditioned vehicle collects you from your Labuan Bajo hotel.
  • 08:00: Board your private speedboat at the Labuan Bajo harbor. Your guide conducts a safety briefing and fits you with professional-grade Scubapro or Aqualung snorkeling equipment.
  • 09:15: Arrive at Padar Island. Embark on the 30-minute trek to its iconic viewpoint for a panoramic perspective of the park’s tri-colored bays.
  • 11:00: A short cruise to Pink Beach. You will have approximately 75 minutes for a guided pink beach snorkel session directly from the boat or beach.
  • 12:30: Lunch is served onboard. Expect a menu of freshly grilled fish, chicken satay, local vegetables, and tropical fruit, prepared by our onboard cook.
  • 14:00: Arrive at Manta Point (Karang Makassar). Your guide will assess the current and lead a drift snorkel to observe the manta rays at their cleaning stations.
  • 16:30: Return to Labuan Bajo harbor, followed by a private transfer back to your accommodation.

Frequently Asked Questions about Labuan Bajo Snorkeling

To help you prepare for your Komodo snorkel tour, we’ve compiled answers to the most common questions our specialists receive.

When is the best season for snorkeling in Komodo?

The prime season runs from April to December, during the dry season. The absolute best conditions for water clarity and calm seas are typically from June through September. The wet season, from January to March, can bring rain and rougher seas, though snorkeling is still possible.

Are the currents in Komodo dangerous for snorkelers?

Komodo’s currents are the source of its rich biodiversity and must be respected. We mitigate risk by employing highly experienced local captains who understand the tidal patterns intimately. Guides always enter the water first to assess conditions, and we select snorkel sites daily based on safety. All snorkeling is guided, and drift snorkeling techniques are used in areas like Manta Point.

What is the booking and payment process?

After you submit an inquiry form, a specialist will contact you to refine your itinerary. Once confirmed, we will issue an invoice. A 50% deposit is required to secure your charter, payable via international bank transfer or a secure credit card payment link. The final 50% balance is due 30 days prior to your departure date.
