Best Time, Gear & Tips

The dry season in Komodo runs April to November and peaks in July and August; December to March is the green season, wetter and much quieter. That single fact drives most timing decisions, but it is not the whole picture — manta aggregations are largest from December to February, and the calmest weeks for a nervous swimmer are not always the busiest ones. Water sits between 26 and 30°C all year, cool enough at exposed southern sites from June to August that a shorty wetsuit earns its space in the bag. These pages cover month-by-month conditions, what to pack for a day boat versus a liveaboard, mask and fin choices for drift sites, and the small habits — defogging properly, kicking from the hip — that separate a comfortable hour in the water from a short, cold one.
